Do I Need Surgery

The main purposes of bunion surgery are to remove the ‘bump’, correct the toe shape, and reduce the pain from the symptoms of having a bunion. As a result, your doctor will consider the following factors before recommending surgery: the severity of the bunion, age, overall health, and the condition of the bones and connective tissue. Since there are non-surgical treatment options for bunions, it is strongly advised to consult with a specialist doctor who can examine the extent of the deformity, assess the underlying cause, and recommend appropriate treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a common condition whereby the big toe pushes towards the second toe rather than pointing straight ahead. This causes the big toe to have an abnormal protrusion that looks like a bump.

They do not go away on their own. If left untreated, bunions can lead to painful swelling, cracked skin, and an overlapping second toe. This may eventually result in arthritis and stiffness in the big toe that may interfere with a person’s walking pattern.

As untreated bunions can result in future foot problems, it is best to visit a specialist when it is still mild. That way, a specialist can determine the degree of deformity, identify the underlying cause of your bunion, and tailor treatments accordingly.

Yes. Bunions can be managed without surgery with the aid of silicone toe spacers, night splints, modified footwear, toe stretching, or custom insoles. While they may not reverse bunions, they provide comfort and prevent skin callosities from developing.

It is a day surgery procedure that is usually done to remove the ‘bump’ of the bone, correct the toe shape, and reduce pain from the symptoms. As such, the aims of the surgery are to restore toe shape, allow for joint motion, immediate weight bearing, and ensure that the bunion has a low recurrence rate.

In general, bunion surgery is very safe and the success rates are high. As long as proper attention is paid to swelling, wound, and bone healing, the chances of bunions returning are quite low. In any case, your surgeon will discuss the risks and complications with you and customise a treatment plan according to your condition, age, and lifestyle amongst other factors.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance

Outpatient care refers to medical services that are provided at a medical facility without the receiver having to stay overnight in a hospital. As they are the most common form of care, many corporate insurance plans have an outpatient insurance coverage that can adequately cover outpatient consultations and treatments. You may also be eligible for panel direct billing in which your bills are directly billed to your corporate insurance provider. It is best to check with your company on such coverage policies.

In addition, personal accident insurance plans may cover some aspects of outpatient care as well. If you have an orthopedic injury arising from an accident or trauma, such plans can be utilised for your outpatient care. It is best to check with your insurance agent on your individual accident policy coverage.
